Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens
The €566 million Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a major national project at the Athens Faliron Delta. The Center is fully funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (www.snf.org
), and will be donated to the Greek State, upon its completion, in 2015.
The SNFCC combines the new buildings for the National Library of Greece (NLG) and the Greek National Opera House (GNO) all within a 170,000m² educational and cultural park, the Stavros Niarchos Park.
The centers are:
- New building for the National Library of Greece
- New Greek National Opera House which has been given the name ‘jewel' by Renzo Piano, the architect of the overall project
- New cultural park, providing open space in the densely populated city

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center will be created for the use of the Greek people by adopting state-of the art international standards for design, function, and accessibility, particularly with respect to individuals with special needs.
The vision of the SNFCC is to become the ‘public forum for learning, cultural development and recreation'. State-of-the-art facilities will be evident across all three projects, while aesthetically the design will incorporate essential elements of the area's heritage.

The approach
We're providing project management, cost estimating services, LEED advice and risk and value management analysis from an international team of consultants.
The environmental qualities of the Cultural Centre are crucial to the design. SNF and Renzo Piano's Building Workshop has a mission to create an emissions neutral facility. The project has been conceptualised with the highest standards of environmental sustainability. The initial LEED report has already achieved Gold Certification in line with this.
Outcome
The anticipated completion date is 2015.
