Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, Athens
The €450 million Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) project includes funding for the planning, construction and outfitting of a major national project at the Athens Faliron Delta.
It will combine three national centres all wrapped within a new cultural park, located in an area covering approximately 225,000m².
The centres are:
- New building for the National Library of Greece
- New Greek National Opera House which has been given the name ‘jewel' by Renzo Piano, the architect of the overall project
- New National Ballet School
- New cultural park, providing open space in the densely populated city
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre will be created for the use of the nation by adopting state-of the art international standards for design, function, and accessibility, particularly with respect to people with special needs.
The vision of the SNFCC is to become the ‘public forum for learning, cultural development and leisure activities'. State-of-the-art facilities will be evident across all three projects as will aesthetics of the design towards the area's heritage.

The approach
Faithful+Gould is providing project management, cost estimating services, LEED advice and risk and value management analysis from an international team of consultants across the UK, USA and Europe.
The environmental qualities of the Cultural Centre are crucial to the design. SNF and Renzo Piano's Building Workshop has a mission to create an emissions neutral facility. The project has been conceptualised with the highest standards of environmental sustainability. The initial LEED report has already achieved Gold Certification in line with this.
Outcome
The anticipated completion date is 2015.
