Continental Airlines - George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, TX
Project
In 1996, Continental Airlines’ growth projections indicated a need to expand its Houston hub operations at George Bush Intercontinental Airport from the existing Terminal C to another terminal.

The approach
We provided a full line of project management and construction management services for this ambitious expansion program.
Our services included:
- the preparation of project budgets
- financial planning
- cost estimating
- cash flow projections
- value engineering
- design and construction scheduling
- coordination of long lead time items and Continental direct procurements
- management of the bid process
- negotiation of construction contracts
- permit acquisition
- safety planning
- construction oversight
- change order processing
- monthly reportin
- other construction administration duties
Continental negotiated a special facilities lease with the City of Houston to take over the 20 existing gates in Terminal B.
To complete the expansion, Continental contracted Faithful+Gould to manage the relocation to Terminal A of the airlines then leasing space in Terminal B, and for the complete buildout of Continental’s desired facilities in Terminal B.
The self-contained Terminal B operation includes ticketing, baggage handling facilities, airline ticket offices, a Continental Presidents' Club and other facilities typical of terminal operations.
In order to facilitate Continental’s split operations between Terminals B and C, however, a secure airside connection in the form of an above-ground people mover was built for passengers needing to connect between terminals.
Outcome
As a result of our managed Terminal B expansion program, Continental was able to increase its Houston operations from an average 425 flights a day to 650.
