Project Controls Manager

Please describe an ‘average’ day in your current job.
There is no such thing as an average day. Every day seems to throw up new challenges and issues that need resolving. My current role involves helping the client roll out a new Project Controls and Planning tool. This involves setting up project plans, training client staff, resource loading programmes, producing cost forecast based on the current project plan, productivity reporting, project progressing and earned value analysis.
What do you like most about your role?
It is a varied role, every day can be different and you don’t have to sit at your desk all day. Communication is key to ensuring I get the best, most accurate information from people, which makes my job easier.
What qualifications do you have?
BA (Hons) Construction Management
ICIOB Member
What got you interested in your specialist field?
I began my career as a planner, which I enjoyed as I like bringing some kind of order/structure to complicated situations. Moving into Project Controls seemed like a natural progression. Having a direct link between cost, time and progress means I have more clarity and more control over a project.
What interesting projects have you been involved in while at Faithful+Gould?
During my time in the North America, I worked with Intel, programming construction work in a clean room environment. Following the September 11 attacks I also worked with the TSA in rolling out new baggage screening equipment to every major USA airport within a one-year timescale. Since returning to the UK I have worked on the Heathrow Terminal 5 project. This was very interesting to work on; the sheer size and complexity of the programme and Project Controls aspect of it made sure there was never a dull moment.
