Birmingham International Airport, International Interchange
- A high quality public transport interchange for air, rail and bus users linking Birmingham International Airport, International Rail Station and National Exhibition Centre.
- Interfaces with the 'SkyRail' automated people mover.
- Involved major alterations/improvements to existing rail station, and new build of the main interchange building creating a 'signature' building.
- Faithful+Gould was appointed project managers, quantity surveyors and planning supervisors.
The approach
- We were involved in the early selection of a contractor to ensure design challenges were managed out and cost certainty achieved.
- An innovative procurement route was established to ensure that all the objectives of numerous stakeholders were met and regulatory approvals achieved.
- Extensive co-ordination with the contractors installing the automated people mover was required.
The challenges
- To construct the Interchange to a high standard and demonstrate value for money to all stakeholders.
- To meet all the regulatory and commercial objectives set by Network Rail in maintaining station operation during the construction period.
Outcome
- The International Interchange was one of the first of these types of interchange facilities to be constructed in the UK.
- Completion of the building and commissioning of the people mover was achieved on programme.
