Gloucestershire College of Art and Technology (GLOSCAT)

A £26 million project to provide 4 new buildings on the campus.

The new accommodation chiefly provides for vocational based courses, including:

  • motor vehicle engineering,
  • technology studies,
  • construction trades,
  • performing arts,
  • childcare,
  • information technology,
  • hairdressing, and
  • science.

There are also traditional classrooms, a main reception, college administration offices and restaurant facilities.

A separate crèche facility for students is provided in a retained listed building.

The approach

  • Provision of pre-contract cost planning, value engineering and works package Bills of Quantities.
  • Two stage design and build contract.

The challenge

  • Working with the client, contractor and design team to achieve extensive new facilities within a very tight construction budget.
  • The college is situated within the old docks area in Gloucester, and includes limited car parking plus pedestrian and cycle routes.

Outcome

  • Completed one month early (June 2007), in time for students joining the college in September.
  • Competed within the agreed contract sum.
