Heathrow Terminal 5 Building Projects

Project

  • Commercially important International Departure and Arrival Passenger Lounges – these state-of-the-art lounges are for Club and First Class British Airways Customers in Terminal 5 areas A, B and C.
  • Airfield Operational Buildings – These buildings are separate from the main terminal and provide operational support activities. Consisting of three operational areas the accommodation includes staff areas, engineering stores for spares, vehicle maintenance, de-icing, tug charging and chassis wash.
  • Staff Accommodation – Support accommodation within the terminal both on landside and airside consisting of offices, rest areas, waiting areas, washroom and changing facilities.
  • Passenger Processing – Fit out of all the check-in facilities
  • Heads of Stand – the facilities required to support the aeroplane loading and unloading area. The units were prefabricated off site, delivered and fitted to prepared areas.
  • Information Management Systems – British Airways IT installation. Faithful+Gould reported monthly on IM cost and spend issues.

The Approach

  • In addition to the project work, Faithful+Gould has been providing specialist capital and industrial buildings allowances advice including preparation of reports to the revenue and negotiation.
  • Faithful+Gould has had staff seconded to BA and BAA, located at Heathrow since construction began in 2001.
  • The T5 project was given public inquiry approval in 2001 and construction commenced in July 2002.
  • Faithful+Gould were appointed as cost manager to the British Airways Terminal 5 team, who worked to help define and develop the airline's requirements for the project, and to work with BAA's team (the developer) to arrive at a design solution that is acceptable to both developer and occupier (BA).
  • Whole Life Cost studies, procurement strategies, cost planning and management and value management.

The Challenge

  • Supporting client objectives and requirements over an extended project development phase.
  • Adapting project briefs and scope to changes in the aviation industry
  • Ensuring British Airways achieve value for money from its suppliers including BAA where they deliver projects on BA’s behalf

Outcome

  • T5 was ready on time and within budget. The terminal opened for business on 27 March 2008.
