Mains Rehabilitation, Essex and Suffolk Water

Project

  • An on-going extensive, 15 year, £30m programme of water main renewal and the rehabilitation of existing iron mains to overcome water quality issues
  • Trenchless techniques extensively used:
  • spraying internal pipe surfaces of structurally sound mains with a polyurethane rapid-set lining to extend usable life, and provide clean, corrosion free inner surfaces
  • renewing corroded mains using:pipe bursting (breaking apart the existing pipe below ground and dragging new synthetic pipe in to the remaining void); some use of directional drilling (below ground bore guided by above ground system); as well as traditional open cut methods
  • Faithful+Gould were appointed in 2002 to provide cost control and cost monitoring of the works; to audit the contractor’s final ‘pain share/gain share’ submissions; and to offer advice on any contractual issues that may arise

The Approach

  • The rapid progression of the work meant regular close scrutiny of the contractor’s submissions was essential
  • Faithful+Gould seconded staff to the Essex and Suffolk Water team to provide the close liaison needed to provide the required controls and to expedite the resolution of any contentious issues

The Challenge

  • To improve water quality by means of mains renewal and mains lining, all to water industry standards
  • To ensure that all works were carried out to strict programme and within the budget as required by the water regulatory bodies
  • To provide minimal disruption to customers and to the public whilst works progress

Outcome

  • Works are still on-going, with an expected completion at the end of 2006. The project remains on programme and within acceptable overall costs
  • The use of trenchless techniques where possible have helped maintain programme and reduce inconvenience to customers and to the public
  • Customer water quality has significantly improved in the rehabilitated zones
