Nirex
Faithful+Gould was appointed as agent for Nirex to deliver the Sellafield Geological Investigation, a report for a public enquiry on the suitability or otherwise of the area under and around Sellafield for the location of an underground repository for the storage of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW).
We managed and supervised the completion of hydrogeological testing, geophysical surveys and deep drilling, and seismic surveys - both on shore and off shore, and interpreted the geological data for the report.
Working as part of the UK Nirex team and based at their premises in Didcot, we provided supplier commercial management services.
Responsibilities included:
- Setting up the warrant procedures
- Auditing all the consultant's invoices
- Helping the supervising office to monitor expenditure against deliverables.
We drew on extensive mining experience to provide estimates / options for an underground repository. The repository comprised a series of vaults - one for waste receipt and 2 vast vaults for storage - 300m to 1000m below the surface. These were to be accessed by a rail system to take ILW contained in drums to be stored on stillages.
