Portland Marina, Osprey Quay
- A new boating marina at Osprey Quay, Portland Harbour. The marina comprises around 560 berths together with a range of buildings including a bar/restaurant, administration and office space, washroom facilities, maritime business units and landside boat storage.
- The marina, in association with the adjacent WPNSA, will be used to host the Olympic Games sailing event in 2012.
- The marine contract included the construction of an offshore breakwater, reclamation of seabed, a 50T boat hoist structure, dredging of an approach channel to the hoist dock, and a steel framed piled access walkway.
- Faithful+Gould was appointed quantity surveyors and CDM co-ordinators.
The approach
- Provision of a full range of cost management services throughout the project.
- The project was split into two separate contracts; the marine and civils works, and the remaining land-based construction.
- Selection of appropriate procurement routes for the diverse elements of the project was of great importance.
The challenge
- To provide a market-leading marina with high quality facilities for cruising and racing yachtsmen.
- The requirements of the Olympic brief needed to be incorporated into the project brief to ensure compatibility with technical and non-technical functions of the Olympic operations. The marina proposals needed to deliver appropriate land and berths for use in the 2012 Olympic Games and associated practice / trial events in 2010 and 2011.
- Various site constraints including environmental issues and the need for the adjacent Coastguard Search and Rescue facility to remain operational at all times during the redevelopment of the site.
Outcome
- Subsequent appointment to provide cost management services for the construction of a 320T boat hoist structure for Sunseeker adjacent to the project.
