We have been awarded the opportunity to provide cost estimating services at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNS) in Norfolk, Virginia, the primary east coast maintenance and repair site for all classes of Navy ships.
As the nation's oldest shipyard, the aging infrastructure at the NNS is quickly deteriorating and will go through an extensive $250 million restoration.
The project will consist of demolishing existing Pier 4 and Pier 5, which were built in the early 1900s, and rebuilding one pier.
The new pier will stretch 1,225 feet and will be designed to berth ships as large as aircraft carriers. Included in the new deck infrastructure is a new restroom facility, heavy weather mooring, a portal crane track and rail track.
Major dredging activities will be completed in preparation for the new structures and systems including a utility system, mechanical system, electrical system and communications system. The new Pier 5 will accommodate all current and future classes of ships for the Navy.
The second part of the project is the demolition and reconstruction of Berth 25, Berth 31 and Building 225. The new berths will be low level relieving platforms with mechanical and electrical tie-ins.
