The $400 million BMW automobile assembly plan in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was completed within 108 weeks of Notice to Proceed (NTP) until the first car rolled off of the assembly line. When we were given NTP, the Letters of Intent had not been issued to the design team, nor had all the specialty consultants, including the process designer, been selected. The main assembly plant scope also included a distribution warehouse, training and development center, visitors' center, covered parking structure, chemical storage facility, and brake testing and de-wax structures.
We were also selected to provide project management for the construction of the BMW Academy and Delivery Center, this project included: The Delivery Center, a Technical and Operations Training Center, paint and body shops, workshops, administration and support areas, a commons and cafeteria area, a track-side center, and various on-site circulation and site improvements. The total size of the construction project is 61,719ft2. BMW rehired the Faithful+Gould team to manage a 900,000ft2 expansion of its assembly plant and construction of a new 60,000ft2 Engineering Analysis Center. BMW again selected Faithful+Gould and joint venture partner Global Performance to manage all BMW capital improvement and new construction projects at the Spartanburg County plant through 2002. This work included major expansions of the paint and body shop.
Faithful+Gould provided program management services to BMW for the construction and completion of their first automobile manufacturing plant located in the United States. This mammoth building program involved 1.8 million square feet of space in twenty buildings on a 200 acre site. The construction value for the 1,039 acre complex exceeds $1.7 billion. We managed over 15 prime consultants for design and 11 prime general contractors throughout the life of the project. There were in excess of 100 bid packages with a building construction value exceeding $140 million.
