A sandy sea-shore in She Shan, China, a star-studded audience of pirates, ship mates, cabin boys and wenches, the British navy, a First Lord of the Admiralty, a Captain FeatherSword, a Captain Pugwash and the odd parrot or two attended the British Chamber Shanghai 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Annual Charity Ball 2007.
More than 750 guests enjoyed a beach cocktail reception and after finishing their indentures set sail for dinner on the stunning set of the Hispanola. Lars Tharp, as Long John Silver, took time off from the UK’s Antiques Roadshow to lead everyone thorough the night’s festivities.
The business community enthusiastically supported the event with gusto and Faithful+Gould as the evening's gold doubloon sponsor also provided the buckets and spades!
This year the nominated charity was the Smile Train, an organisation that helps children with cleft palates receive simple surgical procedures that will help them to lead normal lives.
Both the silent and live auctions raised a record amount for the charity. At the time of writing the exact monies raised were still being tallied but the British Chamber believes it is well over USD$80,000. A huge thanks went to Faithful+Gould which donated the auction prize of the evening – two tickets to watch Manchester United play at Old Trafford as guests of Faithful+Gould in its premier suite – this auctioned off for an incredible USD$20,000.
Regional director for Asia, Barry Piper said "The evening was a huge success in raising money for charity and everyone really entered into the spirit of the occasion and really enjoyed themselves – once again marking out the British Chamber Ball as the ball of the year."
