Shantou University, founded in 1981, is a public institution that is located in Shantou, Guangdong, a city in Southeast China. As part of its expansion plan and to further enhance students’ learning experience, the university is adding two eco-friendly facilities on campus.

The project covers a total area of 15,737sqm and will comprise a three-storey arts education centre (11,166sqm), as well as a music hall (4,571sqm) comprising four floors with a basement level. Both structures will be connected by a bridge, designed and built to Zero Carbon principles.

Currently in the final construction drawing phase, we have been working alongside the designer to achieve our client’s green aspiration by providing specialist advice on sustainability and energy conservation for the project. Our sustainability solution incorporates architecture, MEP and landscape designs in a holistic approach that is both cost effective and practical.

The design strategies that will be applied to this project include:

  • Passive design strategies – usage of ambient energy sources instead of purchased energy like electricity or natural gas. This includes daylighting, natural ventilation, and heating. Based on the schematic design, we will conduct simulation analysis of building sunshade, including indoor and outdoor environmental quality.
  • Active design strategies – focuses on the reduction of purchased energy consumption. These strategies include a review of the heat pumps, radiant panels or chilled beams, electric lights, HVAC system, BA logic and the airflow design for the music hall
  • Renewable energy utilisation – usage of solar, wind and geothermal energy, which will help meet our target of achieving zero net carbon emissions.

James Cai, project manager for Energy and Environmental Services, comments: “A healthy and comfortable indoor and outdoor environment is imperative for students, faculty and staff on the campus. This is especially essential for music halls, where acoustic conditions can either increase or decrease the overall comfort level of the space; which is why applying the right acoustic solution and selection of effective recycled acoustic products to the design is important to ensure space is functional.”
