Faithful+Gould acted as project manager on the £18.6 million Old College Refurbishment project, part of the University of Edinburgh's £1.5 billion capital spend for their vision of creating a world-class estate for a world-class university.
The project involved transforming an imposing 250-year-old Grade A-listed building into a contemporary academic facility, whilst celebrating and preserving the building’s heritage and history. The refurbishment project maximises Old College’s usefulness as the home of the University of Edinburgh Law School, protecting its future. The building’s character has been maintained, restoring the Senate Room, the Adam lecture theatre, and the two historic staircases. The building is now more navigable and accessible, connecting all levels with one lift and an improved horizontal circulation pattern.
Early reactions are very positive, both from the Law School who have recently resumed occupation, and from members of the public, who are invited to use the café. The refurbishment project has transformed one of Scotland’s most significant buildings, giving it an important, ongoing useful life. It now has a promising future that justifies ongoing investment, enabling its continued survival and protecting it for future generations.
