Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) CO2 research facility has won awards at both the Insider West Midlands Property Awards 2017 and the Education Estates 2017 awards.
The team from our Birmingham office provided quantity surveying services and worked with a single specialist contractor to deliver a bespoke, yet competitively priced solution to design and build a ‘Free Air Carbon-dioxide Enrichment’ field facility, that will test the resilience of mature forest in a high carbon future. This pioneering £10.4m CO2 research facility in remote historic woodland is the first of its kind in the UK and only the second in the world.
The BIFoR project has generated interest from across the globe due to the importance that the project’s empirical findings could have on setting the political agenda for climate change and has previously scooped two awards at the West Midlands RICS awards in May this year.
Insider’s Property Awards are a showcase of the biggest and best projects from across the West Midlands and offer a unique moment to honour the quality of the sector, the BIFoR project won the Sustainability award at this prestigious ceremony.
The Insider judges hailed the environmental research scheme “as a testament to the skills and knowledge of the partners involved” and said it is a project which "puts this region on the global map".
The Education Estates Awards, held earlier in November, are a national celebration of excellence and achievement in the education industry. The BIFoR project won the client of the year award.
Simon Kendall, regional director and education sector lead for the Birmingham office commented, “We are proud to have been recognised for our contribution to the innovative BIFoR and winning these awards reinforce Faithful+Gould’s position as a leading consultant in the higher education sector.”
John Rawlinson, director and head of operations for Faithful+Gould’s Birmingham office added, “Universities play a major role in the local built environment so I’m immensely proud of the team to have scooped these two awards with one of our key clients the University of Birmingham. These pivotal wins highlight the positive impact we’ve made and are continuing to make to the City of Birmingham’s landscape.”
