Faithful+Gould has further strengthened its education portfolio with a flagship project to provide state-of-the-art facilities at a leading Durham University.

The Newcastle office of international project management and cost consultants Faithful+Gould has further strengthened its education portfolio with a flagship project to provide state-of-the-art facilities at a leading north east university.

Working for Durham University Estates Department, Faithful+Gould won the 44 week contract through a framework agreement to provide cost management services on a world-leading centre called The Institute for Hazard and Risk Research (IHR²). The Institute, which will comprise two state-of-the-art laboratories and one seminar room as well as staff and postgraduate offices, will be located in the university’s city centre campus.

The £3 million project will see the Newcastle based team being assisted by Atkins, which is providing project management, architectural, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services on the prestigious scheme.

Regional director Mike Foggon commented, "The project did present some challenges to our experienced team and the design consultants have worked hard to produce a highly distinctive building on a confined site, within a strict budget. I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished building upon its completion in September 2007."

The new facilities provide a purpose-built base for the IHR², a cross-university institute that conducts research on risk, vulnerability and resilience and response in natural and social environments. It is managed and located within the Department of Geography. It will be opened in 2007 among the celebrations to mark the University’s 175th anniversary.

Simon Watt, senior project manager at Durham University, said: "Over the coming years Durham University is planning to make significant improvements to its buildings. The construction of IHR² is an important aspect of our 175th anniversary campaign. Faithful+Gould’s team is highly experienced in the education sector and has provided valuable advice to us throughout the project. Its involvement in this scheme has ensured that we are able to hand over the reigns of the project in confidence that our new facility will be completed on time for its opening."
