Student 'digs' have traditionally conjured up images of rising damp, warm clothes and never being able to get into the shared bathroom. These days, however, it’s a different story, with new student residences being more reminiscent of contemporary living than the Young Ones.
The University of Birmingham is looking to offer students high-quality, realistically-priced state of the art accommodation by redeveloping its halls of residence with the help of project and cost management consultant Faithful+Gould. Work has now started on the re-development of the existing Mason Hall site on the University’s Vale campus and Faithful+Gould is providing quantity surveying services for the project, which has a contract value of £33.5million.
Set to be completed for the University’s September 2008 admissions, the new residence will accommodate 876 students all with en-suite facilities. Higher specification single or double studio apartments will also be available.
Faithful+Gould quantity surveyor for the project, Simon Kendall, commented: "We're certainly seeing a rise in universities looking to upgrade their student accommodation to ensure students are living in a comfortable, safe environment which incorporates the benefits and community spirit of student living. Students nowadays are demanding high-quality rooms, and are often willing to pay extra for en-suite bathrooms. We’re delighted to have been appointed by the University for this project which signals a major transformation of accommodation for The University of Birmingham students."
The University of Birmingham continually seeks to improve the quality of its accommodation and has already recently completed the refurbishment of Shackleton Student Residence with the help of Faithful+Gould.
