A major refurbishment project for one of the north east’s leading colleges is being undertaken by Faithful+Gould.

Carrying out the refurbishment to Tyne Metropolitan College in North Tyneside, Faithful+Gould is acting as project and cost manager on the £1.2 million project which is an ongoing programme of facility investment. The project will comprise extensive work on both sites of Tyne Metropolitan College, which was formed on 1st March 2005 following the amalgamation of North Tyneside College and Tynemouth Sixth Form Academy.

Refurbishment to college reception, information centres and college libraries will be carried out at both the Academy and Coast Road campuses. The construction of a new link corridor and courtyard will begin on the Sixth Form Academy site which will act as a connection between the new Millennium block and the Edwardian Hawkeys Building.

New catering facilities will also be built on the Coast Road site which will enable the College to provide freshly cooked meals on the premises. A phase of environmental landscaping will also aesthetically enhance the site.

With the most disruptive construction work being scheduled during the summer holidays and with a deadline for all work to be finished by the start of the September term the consultants have been keen to ensure that a high level of health and safety requirements are adhered to.

Working with Mackellar architects, Faithful+Gould has been involved in the project since January 2005. Overseeing the project Mike Foggon, associate director for Faithful+Gould, said: "We are delighted to be working with Tyne Metropolitan College. This scheme comes at a very significant time for the college and we have executed careful project planning which has made it possible for building work and teaching to be carried out at the same time with minimum disruption. The project is well underway and is on schedule to finish in September as planned."

The amalgamation builds on the specialisms of the two former colleges, and provison is now located within 4 specialist curriculum centres; the Centre for Business & Technology, the Centre for Creative & Leisure Studies, the Centre for Professional Care & Education and the Sixth Form Academy.

Les Walton, principal of Tyne Metropolitan College, commented on the project: "The project marks a very exciting time in our development, TyneMet will provide exceptional facilities to the North Tyneside area. The work Faithful+Gould have carried out will ensure the project will be finished on time and to budget."
