The four-storey building will provide teaching space for up to 2,200 students across its floors, including two lecture theatres which can combine into a 750-seat auditorium, a 200-seat collaborative lecture theatre, office accommodation, a café for informal working and exhibition space.
Faithful+Gould are providing project management, quantity surveying, health and safety, BREEAM, building control and Building Information Modeling (BIM) services to the project.

The Learning and Teaching Centre will feature state-of-the art learning facilities for up to 2,200 students across three floors. The centre will also provide exhibition space, café and expansive social learning spaces. Its oyster shell shape, with a dynamic sweeping glazed curve is a reference to the centre’s location on Oystershell Lane and reflects the history of the site."
The 82,000sqft building, scheduled to be complete in Autumn 2019, will be a flagship development for Newcastle University and will be its third building on Science Central, the former brewery and one-time colliery site on the edge of Newcastle city centre.
It is hoped the 24-acre site will eventually create more than 4,000 jobs, 500,000 sq ft of office space and 450 new homes. The site has already seen the construction of award-winning office block, The Core, which Faithful+Gould also worked on.
