The MoD Defence Academy of the United Kingdom based at Shrivenham, Wiltshire has recently awarded a commission for master planning and initial design of a £70 million development project to a multi disciplinary team led by architects, Capita Percy Thomas. CPT are joined by cost management consultants, Faithful+Gould, civil / structural / services engineers, Arup and landscape architects, Fira.
The award has been made on the basis of an ‘ideas competition’ which saw the team combining best use of existing accommodation, with efficient design of new buildings and an innovative lecture theatre and headquarters development which has the HQ ‘wrapped around’ the theatre to reduce external wall area and optimise energy efficiency.
The Defence Academy is an international centre of excellence providing training for mid-career senior serving officers, primarily at post-graduate level. Several of the existing facilities are no longer deemed suitable, calling for a mix of refurbishment, conversion and new build work. The project includes single living accommodation, refurbishment / conversion of a Grade II listed building into a conference centre and extensions to the defence capability centre, as well as a new lecture theatre and headquarters building.
Faithful+Gould is a member of the Atkins Group of companies. It is one of the world’s largest project and cost management consultancies. Faithful+Gould employs over 2,000 staff with a turnover in excess of £120 million and has an expanding office base worldwide.
