Welsh Water’s Award-Winning Project

Faithful+Gould is delighted that Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s water testing laboratory project has been presented with the Gold Award in the Interior Fit-Out category at the 2013 AIS Contractors Awards.

Building a bespoke laboratory facility was a new direction for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. Laboratory services are a vital function for the water company which carries out around 300,000 wide-ranging analyses of drinking water samples every year to ensure the highest possible quality for its three million customers.

Welsh Water had previously outsourced its water testing operations but made a strategic decision to undertake the process in-house. The new purpose-built chemistry, microbiology and cryptosporidium laboratory at Newport in South Wales provides the water company with an analytical testing facility for drinking water samples taken across its supply area. The state of the art facility also further strengthens the company’s scientific capability.

This was a complex and ambitious project, with the challenge of creating a building that served two purposes.

This was a complex and ambitious project, with the challenge of creating a building that served two purposes; housing the water testing laboratories and Welsh Water’s administrative facilities.

Faithful+Gould has an ongoing relationship with Welsh Water, underpinned by a framework agreement to provide consultancy services. We assisted our client in the selection of suitable premises (a former call centre), liaising closely with the main contractor and a specialist laboratory installation consultants.

The project itself necessitated an extremely demanding schedule. Our project management and cost management skills ensured that milestones were met, including the further challenge of bringing completion forward by two weeks to fulfil our client’s changing needs. The 2500m2 £2.5m high quality facility was delivered ahead of schedule and on budget. The average timescale for a typical laboratory project is six months.
