The Ark Royal Close affordable housing project was led by Homes for Northumberland, on behalf of Northumberland County Council. The development involved building 60 new homes on a former school site, designed and constructed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 with Faithful+Gould providing quantity surveying services throughout the project.
The development is held in high regard, with community consultation being crucial to the scheme’s success. Local stakeholders were invited to comment on proposals prior to planning, at a community consultation exhibition; this valuable input was factored into the eventual planning submission and meant the scheme became better connected with the community’s needs.
With up to 80 applications received for individual properties, all were allocated and occupied within eight weeks of completion, and tenant satisfaction and engagement levels continue to be high. It is hoped that the success of the project will enable further local development, generating wider economic benefits for the local communities. Since the project was completed, it has been given industry award recognition.
