Bedford College, Brundtland Building

Faithful+Gould has been a significant member of the project team in the successful delivery of the Bruntland Building, which was awarded the UK’s first BREEAM 'Excellent' education refurbishment project and received a high Considerate Constructors Scheme score of 37 out of 40, which was awarded with a Silver National Site Award.

Faithful+Gould was appointed to provide cost management and life cycle costing advice on the refurbishment of Brundtland Building on the Cauldwell Street of Bedford College. The project included the creation of a new Learning Resource Centre.

Through our collaborative relationship with Bedford College we were able to add value throughout the process by maximising all aspects of the budget, including identifying a cost effective procurement solution. This allowed the college to complete the project within the tight funding timetables (EEFA and SFA funding restrictions), by identification of early risks such as lead in times for a unique cladding solution, which enabled us to procure the cladding package in advance of the main contractor's construction works. This in itself saved 12 weeks on the overall construction programme.

Faithful+Gould was also able to realise over £250,000 of VAT savings, which was reinvested back into the project to boost the overall BREEAM rating, including improving the energy efficiency of the building and supporting other renewable technologies, such as a diabatic water cooling system, windturbine and photovoltaic panels to the roof. These savings were also driven as a result of adopting improvements to various facilities to support accessibility for mobility impaired people. The technologies were locally sourced which also increased the BREEAM rating through identification of local and sustainable community and industry initiatives.

The project was completed on time and to budget, a challenge in itself due to the live working environment in which the project was being delivered.
