A high quality public transport interchange for air, rail and bus users linking Birmingham International Airport, International Rail Station and National Exhibition Centre. Interfaces with the 'SkyRail' automated people mover. Involved major alterations/improvements to existing rail station, and new build of the main interchange building creating a 'signature' building.
Faithful+Gould was appointed project managers, quantity surveyors and planning supervisors. We were involved in the early selection of a contractor to ensure design challenges were managed out and cost certainty achieved. An innovative procurement route was established to ensure that all the objectives of numerous stakeholders were met and regulatory approvals achieved. Extensive co-ordination with the contractors installing the automated people mover was required. The challenges were to construct the Interchange to a high standard and demonstrate value for money to all stakeholders. Furthermore, to meet all the regulatory and commercial objectives set by Network Rail in maintaining station operation during the construction period. The International Interchange was one of the first of these types of interchange facilities to be constructed in the UK. Completion of the building and commissioning of the people mover was achieved on programme.
