Dartington Primary School, located in the rural Devon countryside, was an essential and high-profile project for Devon County Council in South-West England. Faithful+Gould provided project management and cost management services, which included both pre-contract and post-contract commercial services and contract administration.
Faithful+Gould was involved from initial brief through to completion. The project encompassed four separate main stages:
- Design and construction of temporary school
- Demolition of existing school
- Design and construction of new school
- Decant and removal of temporary school
The previous school suffered numerous defects which led to Devon County Council decanting the school into temporary accommodation enabling the existing school to be demolished and new school constructed on the site. One of the key challenges to this project was to ensure that the school was sustainable, value for money and designed to fit the environment and school ethos.
Faithful+Gould worked with Atkins, who provided full design services, to create a value for money design that offers 12 classrooms, including a nursery, all with access to their own outside space. The school includes a studio, pastoral room, library and spacious hall. The character of Dartington is captured by the external play facilities which include forest areas, sand pits, hard play sports courts and grassed pitches.
Dartington Primary School was shortlisted for the Michelmores Property Awards 2019 Education Project of the Year. The new 1,940m2 school provides spacious internals and interactive externals that allow students to make the most of their earlier school years.
