Faithful+Gould provided sustainability and BREEAM assessment services in relation to the design and construction of a major new mechanical biological waste treatment facility in Essex. The building achieved a high 'Excellent' rating at design stage based on a wide range of sustainable design features and project management.
The purpose of the site is inherently sustainable in that it helps to divert waste from landfill by separating waste streams for recycling and processing for energy recovery. However, our inputs also helped to ensure that the building itself had a minimal environmental impact. Key features include energy efficient building design and fabric; onsite renewable energy generation (the extensive roof area lends itself to photovoltaic panels); efficient sanitaryware and rainwater harvesting to reduce potable water use; and building materials with exemplary low environmental impact.
The building includes a visitor centre to provide learning facilities and exhibition space, as well as landscaping and a SUDS lagoon designed to manage surface water drainage.
