Faithful+Gould were appointed to provide cost management services for the £12m improvement works to Kirkgate Market, Leeds. The existing market is Grade 1 Listed and dates back originally to 1857. The market was later extended further following a major fire in 1976. At approximately 14,000m2 the market is understood to be the largest indoor market in Europe.
A core element of the project brief was to improve the look and feel throughout the market, upgrade existing services and to create a new central events space and flexible daily market.
The works were carried out in phases to enable trading to continue throughout the works in this busy market. With approximately 300 tenants and many relocations involved in the alteration works, the project was extremely complex and our team had to get very involved in project options, working closely with the markets team to deliver the best solutions available whilst considering health and safety during the works.
Our team provided dedicated support to the council and markets management team to create a project which provided the best balance of resolving maintenance works and new elements to the scheme to enhance the facility, supporting the future prosperity and sustainability of the market for the next generation.
