We worked on a global framework for Nokia to deliver a number of flagship stores in high profile retail locations worldwide. The flagship stores feature innovative designs incorporating complex multimedia interaction and LED coloured perimeter walls. The focus of each store is on the highest level of customer service and experience. To develop a direct Nokia controlled retail and service interface, and to inspire the development of a hierarchical set of Nokia retail stores which reflect the vision and encapsulate the core values of the Nokia brand. Nokia sought a global project and programme manager who could provide: Central management for the global delivery of the flagship stores, the ability to manage delivery and design finalisation, and access to an experienced global team.
We helped Nokia develop a strategic plan to improve the sustainability of their flagship stores. Our sustainability team:
- Analysed existing designs for quick win sustainability improvement opportunities
- Researched and presented best practice sustainability measures in the retail sector
- Held a workshop to collaboratively prioritise the sustainability measures that optimised the balance between Nokia's corporate sustainability priorities, sustainability benefits and cost of implementation
- Produced a prioritised checklist of sustainability issues to be considered when designing the stores and a Sustainable Building Guide for the design team to refer to during the design and construction process
- Audited the São Paulo flagship store against the checklist and Sustainable Building Guide.
Sustainability and knowledge transfer was key. We set benchmarks for Nokia across the whole programme, and drove sustainability into markets where it isn't usually a high priority. There were many significant international challenges. Each store project within the programme had its own set of unique stakeholders, physical and logistical obstacles, and regional/cultural delivery challenges.
Specific international challenges included: Local permiting, building codes and practices, labour laws and local industrial relations practices, geographical and environmental challenges (such as the specification of glass for earthquake zones), a wide variety of cultural differences varying levels of adherence to sustainability principles.
