Northumberland County Council (NCC) is undertaking a £57m reorganisation of schools in the Ponteland area as it moves from a three-tier to a two-tier system, and the new combined school and leisure centre development will form a major part of the initiative.
To cater for the changes, the current leisure centre in Ponteland will be demolished and replaced with a single new building that will integrate the primary and secondary schools with a state-of-the-art leisure facility on campus.
Faithful+Gould proposed an innovative design competition via Competitive Dialogue for the project's procurement. The procurement focussed on added value provided rather than lowest cost tendered, which resulted in over £2m of added benefits to NCC. The added value took the form of enhancements to the specification and included items such as a climbing area, aqua play, soft play, integrated teaching storage-wall in each general classroom, lecture theatre and activity streets.
Daljit Lally, Chief Executive of Northumberland County Council, said: “The investment into the schools and leisure facilities will provide a fresh and modern learning space for pupils, providing an excellent learning environment and helping to deliver the best possible education for children across Northumberland.”
