The project comprised of the conversion of a former University of Strathclyde office building (Alexander Turnbull Building), removing the roof and adding two levels. Internally the building was fully refurbished creating 87 one-bed studios and one two-bed apartment.
This accommodation offers students a very high spec, self-contained unit. Included is a 4ft bed, en-suite, mini kitchenette with a 4-hob burner, corian worktops, desk and chair. The communal areas are different to the traditional cluster style accommodation, where the kitchen would be the hub, George Street offers a gym, cinema, games zone and break-out areas in addition to specific study rooms.
Key to the refurbishment was to meet the expectations of students pursuing premium living accommodation offered by the student accommodation operator than other alternatives in the city. This required not only quality fixtures and fittings but a high-speed Wi-Fi and internet connection – this was recognised as being one of the key priorities for students when considering where to live during the academic year. Completed ready for the start of 2017-18 academic year, the building was 100% occupied.
Faithful+Gould delivered employer’s agent, quantity surveying and principal designer services throughout the duration of the project for K R Developments until handover to the fund, Empiric Student Property. Most recently it won the Student Accommodation Development of the Year at the Scottish Property Awards 2018.
