Faithful+Gould was appointed as Principal Designer and Health and Saftey Advisor for Symons House project which involved the demolition of the existing 4 storey building. The works were carried out in a manner that saw the building dropped without affecting the surrounding third-party areas by placing a tower crane within the building and establishing the temporary ownership of the Santander car park.
New 23-storey building which is highly prominent within the Leeds City Centre covers approximately 11,388m2 and compromises of 351 premium student studios and cluster flats, a cinema room, gym, dinner party room, lounge areas, seminar & reading rooms and games area. The design of a concrete frame structure that had standardised column sizes throughout the building reduced the need for differing formwork sizes, thus simplifying the work for the contractor and reducing cost and programme duration.
This deluxe student accommodation is set to open in September 2020 but has already added value to and benefited the local community and environment by engaging with local charities, enforcing various environmental initiatives and providing employment for two homeless personnel from within the Leeds Area. The project was awarded Highly Commended in the Building Project of the Year category at the Constructing Excellence Y&H Awards 2019 and triumphed at the Considerate Constructors Scheme winning the Silver National Site Award.
