University of Cambridge, North West Cambridge Development

Since 2012 Faithful+Gould has been providing CDM co-ordination services on the North West Cambridge development project. This project is the largest single capital development project that the University has undertaken in its 800-year history. The development is on a 150-hectare site to the North West of Cambridge. The first phase of the mixed-use development  will comprise student and key worker housing, a supermarket, primary school, community centre, nursery, health facility and public amenity spaces, together with site infrastructure.

Working closely with the client, Faithful+Gould has been effectual in ensuring that all other members of the team are staying in compliant with the CDM and other health and safety regulations. One of the main challenges has been to establish how each of the separate lot principal contractors will each access their lot within the greater site. This has been overcome by the letting of the whole of the site wide infrastructure (including the landscaping) to a single principal contractor and giving them the responsibility for managing site logistics. The development will be an exemplar of sustainable living and residential dwellings will be built to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5 and non-residential homes will be BREEAM Excellent. Phase one of the scheme has a budget of £280m and is due for completion in 2017.
