Wales National Pool, Swansea

Client: City and County of Swansea and the University of Wales Swansea. Value: £10 million. Construction of the prestigious, championship-standard Wales National Pool consisting of a 50m international-standard competition pool together with a 25m warm-up pool, 1200 spectator seats, changing accommodation and land-based training facilities. The main pool has a fully-submersible boom and a movable floor for maximum flexibility. The project was possible because of the largest single award ever made by the Sports Lottery Fund for Wales.

Faithful+Gould provided total project management services, encompassing project and cost management and planning supervisor services, while our parent company, Atkins, provided mechanical, electrical and structural engineering design. The contract was procured on a two-stage Option C target contract with activity schedule to support the partnership approach taken by the two main client bodies. The brief was to provide a sustainable development which minimised the impact on the surrounding environment yet made a positive statement about the 'state of the art' leisure amenities provided. Outcome: Construction on site began in April 2001, and the pool was completed in April 2003. The Wales National Pool is the home for Welsh swimming, and the Wales Amateur Swimming Association has its national administration offices in the building. The pool is used for national squad training.
