The new £30m Ysgol Cwm Brombil in Port Talbot is a 3-16 year co-educational school which has been built for 1,200 secondary students, 210 primary pupils and 45 nursery children. The 65 modern classrooms include top class sports and performing arts facilities, aimed at helping every pupil reach their full potential.
Having successfully delivered a number of award winning schools for Neath Port Talbot Council, including Ysgol Bae Baglan and Ysgol Ystalyfera, Faithful + Gould’s Swansea office was selected by the Council to provide full post contract cost management services for Ysgol Cwm Brombil and its sister project Ysgol Bro Dur.
The new 13,500m2 ‘super school’ has state of the art facilities including the latest educational technology featuring teaching walls and digital connectivity, with over 78 miles of data cabling installed. The completion of phase 2 will see the delivery of the 3G pitch and grass pitches, which will combine with the completed multi use games areas, multi-gym, gymnasium and sports hall.
The school represents Neath Port Talbot Council’s continued commitment to provide education facilities fit for the 21st century digital-age learner and has been delivered in conjunction with the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools initiative on a 50:50 financial basis.
With a preconstruction of 24 weeks and 74 weeks post construction for phase 1, both Ysgol Cwm Brombil and Ysgol Bro Dur were delivered to an incredibly tight timescale and required a close teamworking attitude amongst all working on the project, to deliver it on time and to budget. Phase 2 of the works, which are ongoing, incorporate the demolition of the old school buildings, creating playing fields and outdoor landscaping.
The school has been well received by both pupils and parents and has received a visit from the Prince of Wales. The school was also the winner of the Best Education Building category at the Local Authority Building Excellence Awards 2019.
