The UK construction industry has traditionally used the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) standard methods of measurement for managing capital costs. Up until now the maintenance industry has not had industry-accepted methodologies. This is now set to change with the launch of the New Rules of Measurement (NRM); Order of Cost Estimating and Cost Planning of building maintenance works.
The NRM3 are a suite of documents that have been developed to provide standard measurement rules understandable to all in construction projects. NRM3 will provide consistent rules and guidelines for the measurement of building maintenance and renewal works. These rules will have huge impact on how future buildings are handed over and maintained – as well as supporting the Building Information Modelling agenda.

To launch these new industry standards, Andy Green as part of the RICS will be speaking at eight seminars across the UK in March and April. The seminars will provide the opportunity to find out how NRM3 works, what benefits it offers and how to use them in practice.
The Ministry of Justice, Network Rail and Heathrow Airport are amongst organisations that have been championing these new standards. Over the last few years, Faithful+Gould has been working with these clients on large scale projects to apply the new standards. Case studies from these organisations will be presented as part of the seminars to provide insight into the benefits of using NRM3.
