Faithful+Gould collaborates with BuildForce, connecting the military community with careers in construction

Over the last six months, Faithful+Gould has developed a relationship with BuildForce, a collaborative industry-led programme that connects the military community with careers in construction. Their objective is to reduce the skills gap in the built environment whilst offering a second career to military personnel.

The UK-wide BuildForce Alliance is supported by 92 industry bodies and charities, the government and works in partnership with The Royal Foundation. It is estimated that some 14,000 people leave military careers annually and since January 2017, BuildForce has connected with over 950 service leavers and veterans nationwide.

Faithful+Gould was recently invited to Wyvern Barracks in Exeter to learn more about the initiative. Faithful+Gould is always seeking to diversify and broaden their employee skillsets and by employing former military personnel, we can draw on a host of specialist skills including logistics, risk management and project management.

Our engagement with BuildForce, and Darren in particular, has proved the benefits of looking to less conventional routes when building a team.

Following the successful event and a subsequent interview, Faithful+Gould appointed Darren Duery to join our Southampton office as a project manager. Darren spent almost 29 years in the Royal Navy where his roles included engineering, project management and unit warrant officer in various capacities both in Navy HQ and engineering support units.

Initially unsure of a field to work in after he left the Navy, support from BuildForce and advice from Career Transition Partnership enabled Darren to realise that his skills were transferable to a position in integrated project and programme management which has led him to where he is now with Faithful+Gould.

“We identified that the largest risk to our growth aspirations in Southampton was the availability of enthusiastic and engaged talent”, says Mark Postill, Regional Director and Southampton office lead. “Our engagement with BuildForce, and Darren in particular, has proved the benefits of looking to less conventional routes when building a team. The recruitment process proceeded in a steady and considered way, ensuring that the fit was right for both parties, making sure expectations, working patterns, training and longer term aspirations were all agreed during the interview process. Darren was up to speed surprisingly quickly and has been a natural fit within our energetic office. We have tasked Darren with becoming our BuildForce representative and will make time for Darren to act as an ambassador for BuildForce and Faithful+Gould as our relationship develops further.”
