The UK’s second largest building society, Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) encompasses the Yorkshire, Barnsley, Chelsea and Norwich & Peterborough building societies. Each individual brand had a strong heritage, but a new look was needed to help the 3.5 million customers understand the benefits of being part of a larger group. Upgrading the high street branches to reflect the unifying brand identity presented a challenge.
When Faithful+Gould was appointed to survey the YBS retail estate, I knew our team would be exceptionally busy – 231 branches to survey in two months! Some branches were on the impending Tour de France Yorkshire route and, as a sponsor of the event, YBS needed to be ready. YBS was looking for agility and capacity to service this fast-track programme and Faithful+Gould's integrated project and programme management approach was a perfect fit. For YBS, we swiftly mobilised 15 surveyors from across our four regions, bringing a diverse set of skills and specialist knowledge which draws on our experience of managing similar programmes in the retail and financial services sectors. A core programme management office (PMO) gave YBS a clear Yorkshire-based managerial lead from our Leeds office, together with confident national delivery from our regional offices. A pilot programme of eleven branches tested the delivery model and also ensured completion of those schemes affected by the critical Tour de France schedule.
YBS's investment in its estate was designed to produce a uniform, nationwide standard. For its customers, the consistent look and feel of the branches is differentiated by each trading name's unique colour palette. This brought challenges as the portfolio contains a wide variety of building types and ages, with some having been refurbished more recently than others. Busy high street locations meant site-specific constraints and the buildings were to be occupied throughout the programme. Careful planning, management and execution were needed to minimise disruption to everyday business.

Our PMO and delivery teams worked seamlessly with YBS and their contracting supply chain to accomplish timely delivery of the project's initial phase, with valuable lessons learned taken into account for the subsequent programme. This ensured a low risk and best value solution. The remaining roll-out is paced to suit YBS's corporate plans, with a phased programme encompassing all branch locations.
