Friday in the Field: Positivity in the Workplace

Kenisha Beal-Dickey
At Faithful+Gould we aim to exhibit the constructive expertise and positive outlook that embody our culture and values.

"Today is my best day ever!" When I was growing up, my great-grandmother used to say that all the time. She told me to start each day with that as a mantra. Setting yourself up with a positive attitude right from the start was her ultimate key to success. It’s a simple sentiment, but I have continued to employ this morning ritual into adulthood. I try to bring this attitude to all aspects of my life and I know it has benefitted me greatly in my professional career. This is one of the reasons I enjoy working at Faithful+Gould, where positive thinking is a core element of the Constructive Expertise we use to deliver our services and maximize our clients’ interests. Working here, my personal and professional philosophies can be perfectly in tune.

When I am able to bring value to a project, not only to the client but to the rest of my team by making their jobs less stressful, I believe there is no greater measure of success.

I have been with Faithful+Gould for almost 12 years as a cost estimator. Currently, I provide on-site estimating support to a natural gas and electric utility in Baltimore, Maryland, as part of a subcontractor team under Primera. As a cost analyst, I am responsible for tracking the cash flow of all assigned jobs regarding the construction of utilities for the seven designated project managers.

One of the major elements of my role is to help the transition of financials from the current software, Primavera 6, to my team’s newly integrated software: Work, Planning, and Tracking (WPT). This process is called the 'Interim Solution'. It has proven to be a real asset to the overall flow of the project. I think this is what I enjoy most about my role – the satisfaction that comes through efficient problem solving. When I am able to bring value to a project, not only to the client but to the rest of my team by making their jobs less stressful, I believe there is no greater measure of success. I am grateful to be on a team of talented professionals who have allowed me to grow and enhance my skills in a positive, team-oriented environment.

This positivity in the workplace inspires me to give back in my off hours. Currently, I run a leadership-mentorship team outside of the office that works to economically empower working professionals and help them increase their lifestyle by embracing entrepreneurship. We promote planning, goal setting and self-improvement plans, teamwork, mentorship and overall positive habits for success.

There is still a huge gap for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers. Working in the industry as a woman myself, I feel a responsibility to help combat this and inspire equality.

I am also particularly passionate about promoting women in the workplace. There is still a huge gap for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers. Working in the industry as a woman myself, I feel a responsibility to help combat this and inspire equality. To do this, I volunteer each year with 'Girl Power', talking to young girls about going into the engineering field. I have a background in civil engineering and it's such a blessing to share what I’ve learned with the next generation.

These efforts are especially near and dear to my heart. There is truly no better feeling than helping someone achieve their dreams in this way. I believe that everyone should aim to give back in some capacity, big or small, as it's incredibly rewarding. Through my efforts to give back, both with Faithful+Gould and personally, I hope I can inspire others to follow suit.

Looking forward, I hope to continue on this professional track, delivering exceptional service in a field that I love, while able to give back to my community. I still start each day with my great-grandmother’s reminder and the overall positivity of Faithful+Gould who provide me with the support I need to keep this mantra in mind throughout the day. As I work to make my mark in the engineering and construction industry, I am excited to see what the future will bring.
