Opening of Finn Valley Leisure Centre

The Irish Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring performed the official opening of the new Finn Valley Leisure Centre on Monday 7th of October 2013.

Faithful+Gould has been involved with the project since 2002 providing with our Atkins colleagues full multidisciplinary construction consultancy services for the project from concept design stage in 2002 through to handover now in 2013. The initial feasibility study involved budgets costs for a master plan for a sporting centre of excellence located between the twin towns of Ballybofey and Stranolar in the Finn Valley in Co. Donegal.

The construction project recently handed over involved the doubling in size of the existing Finn Valley Athletic Club to create Finn Valley Leisure Centre by adding a 2,500 m2 extension which incorporates a new 5 lane 25m main pool together with a children's and toddler pool and a spa facility, 300 m2 changing village, gym and fitness area, new entrance and enhanced reception area. A sustainable approach was adopted by the designers for the building energy systems which included a new biomass boiler and future provision for solar power. The external works included the realignment of the adjacent railway road, a new car park and bus parking area and external landscaping. The works were phased to maintain the existing numerous sporting and social facilities of the existing athletic club during construction.

The challenge presented by the Atkins design team in adopting a sustainable design through specification and passive solar design measures meant Faithful+Gould placed considerable emphasis on ensuring that the concept budget, subsequent revisions and ultimately the tender documentation focused on the design and energy efficiencies for the project. There is considerable choice in the marketplace for items such as renewable materials with low maintenance costs, heat pumps, solar panels, and wood pellet boilers. The resultant value engineering and life cycle exercises were conducted in the period.

Kevin Murphy, Director of Faithful+Gould in Ireland, said: "I'm delighted to be able to commend the efforts of both the Atkins design team and the Faithful+Gould cost management team who have delivered the Finn Valley leisure centre to specification, budget and on time. I know firsthand that many years of planning and hard work has gone into bringing this project to fruition and I want to take the opportunity today to commend the Finn Valley Board and Donegal County Council for their vision and determination in seeing it through."

"The challenges have been significant but the result is a fantastic state of the art facility..."

Kevin Murphy, Faithful+Gould's Director

Kevin, continued, "The challenges have been significant but the result is a fantastic state of the art facility and pool available now for the local community of the Finn Valley and across Donegal. I am delighted that through working with Finn Valley and Donegal County Council, we were able to bring our constructive expertise to this project and demonstrate that teamwork is not just in sport."
