Promoting Careers in Construction

Colleagues from our Nottingham office attended a careers fair recently held at Nottingham Girls’ High School.

The fair, where we jointly exhibited with Atkins Transportation, was aimed at pupils between the ages of 13-18 thinking about the next step in their education and career.

Our Nottingham office was represented by David Pick, office director, Sarah Atkins and Laura Buxton, graduate project managers, Tracy Ahyow, graduate quantity surveyor and Lucy Clarke, graduate building surveyor. The team spoke to students and their parents regarding their jobs and the route into their chosen profession.

Sarah Atkins commented, “It was really encouraging to see so many of the girls interested in a career in construction. Initially they didn’t know much about who we are and what we do, but after speaking to the team, they were really surprised and enthusiastic about the variety of roles in the industry, and the fact that you didn’t have to have a degree in a construction related subject to work at Faithful+Gould. A number of the girls were also interested in a work experience placement in the Nottingham office”.

"Talking about local projects that our office has worked on really brought the industry to life for them..."

David Pick, Faithful+Gould Director

David Pick said, "A career in the construction industry isn’t necessarily the first choice of profession for young people, with many not realising that there is a role to suit most academic backgrounds. Talking about local projects that our office has worked on really brought the industry to life for them and we have hopefully converted a few of the students into thinking about a career in construction".

The response from our involvement in the event has been positive, with Fran Hansford, head of careers at Nottingham Girls’ High School commenting, "We would like to say a huge thank you to you and your team for giving up your time to participate in our careers fair… we greatly appreciated your involvement… feedback has been fantastic".

We are committed to promoting diversity in the workplace, and see activities such as this key to the process. For more information please contact David Pick on his profile link below.
