Between August 2012 and August 2014, James was RICS Matrics Derbyshire Chairman. In 2013, following an application and interview, James was successfully selected to sit on the RICS Matrics UK Board and in June 2014 stepped up to become RICS Matrics UK Board Vice Chairman.

RICS Matrics is part of the RICS and was created to look after the interests of members entering the profession and those relatively new to the profession. Members include students, trainees (including those going through the APC) and all Chartered members up to 10 years post qualification. The organisation creates a youthful, forward thinking, challenging, nurturing and vibrant environment for its members and enables them to grow and feel like an integral part of the wider RICS community.
For over 125 years, RICS Matrics (formerly Junior Organisation) has provided networking opportunities at a local, regional and national level, helping to organise business and social events, services and publications for members. There are over 40 local RICS Matrics groups across the UK. These local groups are made up of committee members who work very hard to provide events for the benefit and enjoyment of the wider RICS Matrics membership. These include new member receptions, inter-professional networking events, social events, APC support, charity balls, local heats for the national Auctioneering competition, sporting events and many more.
"During my year as Chairman I intend to visit as many local groups as possible with the intention to visit all 12 RICS UK regions..."
James Baker, Faithful+Gould Managing Building Surveyor
During his year as RICS Matrics UK Chairman, James intends to focus on careers and education continuing the work done by Sally previously, with the aim to make surveying and the profession a career of choice. Further to this, James intends to contribute to raising the profile of RICS Matrics to increase membership and engagement.
James commented, “I am extremely proud to have taken on the role of RICS Matrics UK Chairman. It is especially a pleasure to succeed Sally as Chairman and I would like to congratulate Sally on a great year and a job very well done, the bar has certainly been set high! During my year as Chairman I intend to visit as many local groups as possible with the intention to visit all 12 RICS UK regions as part of my Chairman’s Challenge. As a passionate Chartered Surveyor, having the opportunity to be an ambassador for the profession and promote surveying as a career of choice is something I cannot wait to get started with.”
