From pre contract to completion we have been working as part of the delivery team on the development of Bury's new £350 million shopping centre, The Rock.
The Rock complex now offers:
60 shops - 500,000ft2 of retail space
Cinema, bowling and entertainment centre
1,250 parking spaces
Around 600 new jobs
All in all, The Rock is an impressive development in what have been difficult economic times. Anchor retail tenants include Debenhams, Marks & Spencer, Next, Peacocks, Primark, H&M, Cult, River Island and Oasis. A Vue cinema and AMF Bowling anchor the leisure content, with restaurant operators Pizza Express, Frankie & Benny's and Nando's also on board.
As quantity surveyors on the scheme we faced a number of challenges: the market went into recession just as the scheme commenced on site; the developer Thornfield went into administration in January. However, the appointment of Hammerson and effective team work between all parties involved ensured that the scheme continued full steam ahead and has met its target opening date.
Mark Brazington, senior project manager at Hammerson, said:
"Faithful+Gould's knowledge and in depth understanding of the commercial aspects of this project have played a crucial role in its successful delivery. They have been great team players and shown total commitment to the project."
Last Friday saw the unveiling of the retail element of the scheme and despite heavy rain it was a major success, with close to 70,000 consumers attending the launch.
Matthew Hardman, associate director for Faithful+Gould, adds:
"To see the site finally coming to life is incredible. The project has been a real challenge at times but the hard work has finally paid off. The Rock is a landmark development in Bury and hopefully will serve to revitalise the town centre and provide a huge and lasting boost for the town's economy."
