Taking place on Friday 9th October as a virtual ceremony, the awards were a celebration of the north east built environment sector, designed to showcase excellence and celebrate the achievements of organisations across the region.
Project and cost managed by Faithful+Gould, The Frederick Douglass Centre beat off stiff competition for the coveted Value trophy and secured a Highly Commended for ‘Integration & Collaborative Working’.
For the Value win, the judges commented: “The client’s procurement approach provided focus on quality over cost for this project. Key drivers and value were at the forefront of the development and collaboration across the project team and stakeholders ensured this continued throughout the project. The flexible learning zones, through the fully automated separating screen, maximises the benefit and use of the facilities. Performance data indicates that by understanding the value and function of the space to each stakeholder, the project has outperformed initial expectations and provided a higher than anticipated revenue stream.”
The £3m restoration scheme of the main pier in Seahouses was led by Northumberland County Council and saw the whole pier “re-skinned”, with exceptional effort made to prevent or minimise any adverse impacts on the marine environment. Cost managed by Faithful+Gould, the improvement project has ensured the pier continues to provide protection to the town and local economy into the future.
Judges commented: “Seahouses Main Pier required an environmentally sensitive design and appropriate construction methods for works within a highly designated marine environment. Added challenges included a fixed deadline, specified by overwintering birds, as well as the safe marshalling of 150,000 human visitors though the site works area. The project team worked closely, using innovative construction techniques to reduce the overall scheme costs to affordable levels realising £380k savings.”
Faithful+Gould’s excellence in project management, cost management and principal designer services supported the delivery of these flagship developments. Lawrence Inkster, Director at Faithful+Gould’s Newcastle Office, said: “We’re incredibly proud that these projects have been recognised at the CENE Awards 2020. Both are a major boost to the north east in positively shaping its future and the local economy, so it is a great honour and privilege for them to be award winners.”
