The €600m (£457m) Renzo Piano design, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) was awarded a 'Merit' in the 2016 International Safety Awards. The British Safety Council International Safety Awards recognises commitment to good workplace health and safety management. Since construction began in 2012, over 1,000 people have been involved in the construction of this project, covering approximately 3,000,000 man-hours.
The project includes the construction and complete outfitting of new facilities for the National Library of Greece (NLG) and the Greek National Opera (GNO), as well as the creation of the 210,000 square-metre Stavros Niarchos Park. The SNFCC site is located 4.5 km south of the center of Athens, on the edge of Faliro Bay, and is designed as a multifunctional arts, education and entertainment complex.
Faithful+Gould is providing an integrated project management service, which includes consultant and contractor procurement, program management, cost management, LEED certification coordination, and support for procurement of facilities management and other operational issues.
Martin Hirko, project director, comments: "The entire project team are delighted to be awarded this prestigious award, as it demonstrates the client’s commitment to high standards of health and safety management. More than 500 entries are received for this award and to be on the list of winners acknowledges and confirms the level of commitment of our project team."

Faithful+Gould has been involved in the project since 2008 and as the project nears completion plans are already underway to bring the project to life. One particular event is the 'Metamorphosis: The SNFCC to the World' on 23rd – 26th June, a four day cultural event which will embrace performances and other programs by internationally renowned artists from Greece and around the world.
The Salini Impregilo-TERNA joint venture deserves specific recognition for their acceptance of the high health and safety requirements in the form of insisting on a "Zero Tolerance Health and Safety Policy" initiated by Faithful+Gould and fully supported by the SNFCC organization.
