Birmingham New Street Station and Grand Central

Faithful+Gould was appointed by Network Rail to provide pre-contract services on the £1bn regeneration of Birmingham New Street Station.

Our involvement in the project started in 2003 on the capacity enhancement project studies. Planning permission was applied for in early 2006 and feasibility exercises were commenced in 2007. Our team has been involved at each Guide to Rail Investment Process (GRIP) stage of the project.

The redeveloped station opened in September 2015 and will provide a world-class station and retail and leisure facilities for the City of Birmingham...

In brief the development comprised of:

  • Refurbishment of all 12 platforms 
  • Reconfiguration and redevelopment of the concourse to enhance passenger movement and experience including improved facilities and introducing additional retail space
  • Creation of a new central atrium above the concourse and within the Pallasades Shopping Centre, along with a new 250,000 square foot extension for the John Lewis store
  • Re-cladding of the station in stainless steel to provide a clear iconic identity for the station
  • Provision of new public realm around the station and alterations to the highway and pedestrian routes
  • Creation of new central atrium above the concourse and within the Pallasades Shopping Centre, including necessary adaptations to the structure and alteration works to the Pallasades.
  • Refurbishment of the Pallasades to create the new Grand Central shopping centre reconfiguring the existing 200,000 square foot retail offering and incorporating a new 250,000 square foot extension for the John Lewis store.

Complexities of the project included the station, one of the busiest in Europe, having to remain 100% operational throughout the five year construction programme.

The redeveloped station opened in September 2015 and will provide a world-class station and retail and leisure facilities for the City of Birmingham, along with economic benefits to the local and regional economy. The project has won a number of awards including overall Project of the Year and the Regeneration Project of the Year at the RICS Grand Final Awards 2016.
