The City Inn Group’s flagship hotel in the heart of Westminster is the largest new build hotel in central London for more than 30 years. The hotel comprises 460 bedrooms and suites, together with conferencing facilities, the Millbank Lounge and City Café Restaurant. Faithful+Gould was initially appointed as cost consultant and then as employer’s agent. The process involved a two-stage design and build contract, enabling the contractor an early start on site, while allowing time for value engineering to ensure the client’s brand requirements were incorporated within the final design.
The multi-storey design produced by Bennetts Associates Architects is located in a triangle of land bounded by John Islip Street and Thorney Street close to the Tate Gallery in London. This involved resolving complex rights of light issues, party wall agreements, as well as maintaining ongoing tenant liaison. As part of the planning process, City Inn provided a unique public covered walkway, created by acclaimed artist Susanna Heron. It features 5m high slate engravings and textural mirrored-glass walls, incorporating art into the built environment. The project won many awards, including: 2003 Architectural Award Best New Hotel – European Hotel Design Awards, 2004 Best New Hotel – International Hotel Investment Forum and the 2004 RIBA Design Award.
