EDG Property, The School Yard

We provided employer's agent, quantity surveying and CDM co-ordinator services for the sympathetic refurbishment of a Grade II listed School and Clock Tower on the busy Harborne High Street in Birmingham, to create four A3 commercial units. To complete the local landmark, the project involved the restoration of the original 150 year old clock to the Clock Tower.

To reduce the environmental impact and to align the restoration philosophy of the project, as much of the original building fabric was retained and / or reused. Major conservation achievements include:

  • Restoration of a derelict building which had been shrouded in scaffolding for many years
  • The restoration works undertaken retained many of the original architectural features and were completed in a sensitive way to ensure The School Yard was returned to its local iconic status
  • A local landmark has been restored and revitalised to provide a building that the local residents are proud of and one that embraces the community spirit

The long term prospects for the building are now cemented. Restaurateurs have committed to long leases (circa 20 years) and have invested heavily in their fit-outs. We have given new life to this building, as a place to eat, meet, learn and live. The project has also been well received by the local community.
