The Priestman Bridge & Road project is the final piece of a jigsaw by Middlesbrough Borough Council (MBC) to revive the Middlehaven area; one of the North-East's largest and most exciting regeneration schemes.
An existing footbridge was removed and replaced with a bascule lifting road bridge, easing congestion on the existing road network and opening approximately 25 hectares of strategically important mixed-use commercial and residential development land on the wider Middlehaven site.
Procured via the Pagabo Framework, Faithful+Gould provided ECC project management, cost management and contract administration services.
Futureproofing the bridge was crucial, and in the event of further investment, the project team incorporated an adaptable design that can convert the bridge into a landmark structure which has the facility to automate the lifting bascule section of the bridge, should regular access into the Middlesbrough Dock be required.
As such, the completion of the project has provided the crucial infrastructure for the developments at Middlehaven and adds momentum to the regeneration that is taking place across the borough. It is a potent symbol of the ambition for Middlesbrough, and lays the foundations for future growth, jobs and prosperity.
