Faithful+Gould’s proven success in securing grant funding is demonstrated in our delivery of Stewart Park. Working with Middlesbrough Council and a multi disciplinary design team, we helped secure just under £5 million of Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery awards, kick starting an overall £7.1 million refurbishment, one of the biggest HLF and Big Lottery funding awards to be granted in the last five years in the North East region.
Stewart Park enjoys a fascinating history as the birthplace of Captain Cook the famous explorer, with significant built and landscape heritage and is a well loved regional park. Our vast experience in heritage restoration works was invaluable to this scheme ensuring best value was obtained with careful project planning minimising disruption to the public and businesses that remained operational throughout the works. The restoration has enhanced the existing Grade 2 listed Victorian estate buildings saving them from potential dereliction and converting them to modern day office and educational use with a new visitor centre designed to complement the old buildings, - echoing the asymmetric shapes using contemporary materials. The parkland has undergone extensive refurbishment and restored a number of heritage features whilst overcoming drainage issues that in the past prevented this extensive site from fulfilling its full community benefit. In six months since the park reopened the recorded visitor numbers have increased from an estimated 400,000 per annum to over 1 million.
The project was developed from town wide consultation and there was a uniformly excellent reaction to the completed scheme evidenced by increased visitor numbers and demonstrated with a number of awards including:
- 2013 RICS Conservation awards
- 2013 Green Apple Built Environment Award
- 2013 CENE Heritage award – Highly Commended
All four phases of the project were delivered on time and within budget transforming the park into a vibrant open park creating significant improvement to local tourism and regeneration.
